Skin concerns can be uncomfortable, frustrating, and sometimes stressful. A new rash, acne flare-up, itching, redness, irritation, dry skin, bumps, or skin changes can make you wonder whether it is an allergy, infection, eczema, acne, fungal rash, insect bite, or something that needs medical attention.

Many common skin concerns may be appropriate for a telehealth visit, especially when symptoms are mild, limited, and can be reviewed with clear photos. During a virtual visit, your provider may ask when the skin concern started, where it is located, whether it is spreading, whether it is painful or itchy, and whether you have fever, drainage, swelling, blisters, or recent exposure to new soaps, lotions, medications, foods, plants, insects, or chemicals.

Photos Can Help During Telehealth

Clear photos can be very helpful for telehealth skin visits. Try to take pictures in good lighting, from different angles, and include both a close-up photo and a photo from farther away to show the size and location. Do not use heavy filters, and avoid applying creams or makeup right before taking photos if possible.

When Telehealth May Help

Telehealth may help with common concerns such as mild rashes, acne, eczema flares, dry skin, itching, insect bites, mild skin irritation, possible fungal rash, or general skin questions. Your provider may discuss self-care, over-the-counter options, prescription treatment when appropriate, symptom monitoring, and when follow-up is needed.

When to Seek Urgent or In-Person Care

Some skin symptoms should not wait for a routine telehealth visit. Seek urgent or in-person care if you have a rapidly spreading rash, fever, severe pain, swelling of the face or lips, trouble breathing, large blisters, skin peeling, red streaking, pus or worsening infection, a rash around the eye, a painful rash with blisters, or a rash after starting a new medication. These symptoms may require hands-on evaluation or emergency care.

Some skin concerns also need an in-person exam or specialist evaluation. Changing moles, suspicious lesions, non-healing wounds, severe acne, recurrent infections, deep wounds, burns, or skin changes that persist or worsen may need evaluation by an in-person provider or dermatologist.
